Introduction to Hong Kong - Aberdeen
Hong Kong's Aberdeen district was the original settlement of the hordes of Chinese who arrived on the island from the mainland after the Treaty of Nanking in 1942 ceded the island to the British. Nowadays, its breathtaking sheltered harbour is still crowded with fishing junks, home to hundreds of Chinese still living a traditional watery lifestyle. The best way to see Aberdeen is from the magnificent floating restaurant and entertainment centre anchored in the harbour, a fairytale setting decorated with red and gold dragons and serving delicious Cantonese cuisine. Aberdeen hotels are good places to stay during a Hong Kong vacation, as they are convenient for all the attractions the fabulous island has to offer, with excellent public transport on and off the water taking visitors quickly to all the famous sights. Aberdeen isn't as upscale or as expensive as Hong Kong's central districts, and gives visitors a clearer glimpse of the lifestyles of its residents and the long history of the enigma that is China.
