Introduction to Hangzhou - City Centre
The eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou was once the world’s most populated metropolis when it was the Southern Song Dynasty’s capital in the 12th and 13th centuries. While this title as since been lost to thronged metropolises such as Shangai, Mumbai and Istanbul, it remains one of the nation’s most frequently visited and most beautiful cities. Situated just 180kms south of Shanghai in the province of Zhejiang, at the southernmost point of China’s Grand Canal, Hangzhou is blessed with a pleasant climate and a breath-taking natural heritage. Most of the hotels in Hangzhou are located near the city’s most famous attraction of all, the West Lake, which lies to the west of the city centre. Here beautiful cultural icons such as the Jingci, Lingyin and Yue-Wang temples can be explored in the tranquil surroundings. The city’s luxurious and mostly franchised accommodations may have a reputation for being expensive, but there are also a clutch of options for those travelling on a tighter budget.
