Haikou is the capital of Hainan Province. It is a charming city boasting many historical sites and a delightful beach area. It is well known for its Tropical Ocean World Theme Park, one of the first of its kind in China. Many Hainan-Haikou hotels are located in the city centre and this is a great base for exploring the many temples in the city, specially the huge Wuyong Temple. Just to the west of the city is the man-made Holiday Beach which offers many water sports and many Hainan-Haikou hotels are located here. A little further along the coast is Shimei Bay, a lovely long white sandy beach which offers boat trips out to the nearby Jiajing Island. A few Hainan-Haikou hotels can be found along this stretch of beach. For those interested in nature and bird watching, a trip to the Mangrove Nature Reserve in Dongzhai Harbour is well worth a visit.
