Introduction to Emeishan - Mountainside
South-central China's Mount Emei (Emei Shan) lends even more stunning beauty to the already gorgeous Sichuan Province. Emeishan Mountainside hotels place their guests right in the heart of this richly verdant, attractive region. Emeishan is situated at the Sichuan Basin's western rim. The Daxiangling Mountains lie to the west. Rising to a lofty height of 3,099 metres, Mount Emei is the highest of China's Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains and is said to be the place where the bodhisattva Samantabhadra gained enlightenment. Emeishan City is nearby at a lower elevation. Mount Emei became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1996. Martial arts are thought to have been taught and practised in the monasteries of Mount Emei in the 1500s and 1600s. The first Buddhist temple in China was allegedly constructed here in the 1st century AD. No fewer than 76 Buddhist monasteries were built on the mountains during the Ming and Qing dynasties from the 1300s to the 1900s.
