China’s northern city of Chengde is one of the most visited destinations in the region. This has not only been something of a modern phenomenon either, as one of the town’s main attractions is the former summer palace of Qing Dynasty emperors. Chengde city centre is only a short distance from this popular attraction, which is significant because many hotels in Chengde are located in the downtown district. There has been an increase in tourists to this beautiful city over the last few years, which is largely due to the fact that connections between Beijing, China’s largest and most significant city, have been improved. When staying in the city, the city centre may not be as popular as the surrounding area, but there are still some interesting places that will keep visitors occupied. Chengde Shopping Mall is a fantastic place to go shopping in the heart of the district, and the Rehe and Zhang Yiyuang tea houses should also be visited. If it wasn’t for the tourist attractions just north of the city’s CBD, tourists wouldn’t need to leave the central district of the city.
