One of the larger cities in Hunan Province is Changde, the site of an important battle for unification in 1943. Of course, its history goes back much further than WWII, with more than 500 Stone Age sites discovered and excavated around the city. Its location on the mighty Yuan River has helped it evolve into one of the region's centres of shipping and commerce. China's second-largest freshwater lake, Dongting Lake, also borders Changde. One of the best spots in the city for dining and drinking is along the riverside street that runs to the lake. There are 276 officially designated historic sites within Changde, but the main attraction is Taohuayuan, a tourism area famous for its 10th-century temples and Qinren village, often called an Eden by classical Chinese poets and artists. The 11th-century Jiashan Temple is also nearby, providing a rare glimpse into a traditional ancient Chinese temple.
