Introduction to Benxi, China
Benxi is located in southeastern Liaoning, one of the two provinces bordering Korea, just before the Liaodong Peninsula. The city is riddled with hilly offshoots from the Changbai Mountains, one of which contains Dragon Cave. Within the cave is Benxi Lake, a historic manmade body supplied by a fresh spring. A Chihang temple was built beside the horn-shaped lake, surrounded by weeping willows and stone pavilions. The great Jiuding Tiecha Mountain, a significant site for its role in the origins of Taoism, is just east of the city and is adorned with spiritual inscriptions along the walls of its many cliffs and caves. A massive river, wide enough for dozens of boats, flows through Benxi Water Cave National Park. Stone flowers, curtains, pillars and stalactites have been forming in this cave for millions of years, filling its visitors with a sense of wonderment. Benxi hotels make great bases for exploring this unique part of northeast China. The city is particularly lovely in autumn, during the Benxi Maple Leaf Festival, when fiery maple leaves blanket the ground.
