Introduction to Beijing - Xuanwu
Southwest of the inner centre of Beijing is Xuanwu, a district which recently became part of Xicheng. Not part of the Imperial City, this area of the Chinese capital was formerly home to mostly low class residents rather than the wealthy aristocrats that inhabited the inner city. Historically, it is the birthplace of Peking opera, a popular form of entertainment even today at the district's Huguang Guild Hall theatre. The small museum here is worth a visit by those with an interest in opera, but the theatre's magnificent interior requires no musical knowledge to appreciate. The large Muslim community of the district is reflected in the eating options and Niujie Mosque. Guests staying at Xuanwu hotels often make a trip to Liulichang market, where antiques are sold and haggling is required. Fayuan Temple is a Ming Dynasty, Buddhist place of worship where sculptures, texts and other cultural relics can be discovered. Visit our Beijing Travel Guide
