No other Chinese beach is said to rival the one situated 10kms south of the port of Beihai. This ancient maritime Silk Road stopover on the Beibu Gulf of China's southwest coast has become one of the nation's most renowned beach resorts. Guests at Beihai Beach hotels are advised to book as early during the busy March to September high season, but this tropical resort's average temperatures rarely dip below 12°C, even in the heart of winter, making it a year-round getaway. The beach stretches 24kms and extends to as much as three kilometres wide in some parts. Its waves are gentle, its sands are fine and white, and its waters are free of sharks. Several sanatoriums are situated here because the beach's fresh and clean air is said to benefit a number of ailments. A few submarines and shipwrecks are displayed in the Submarine World museum. Two nearby volcanic islands, Xieyang and Weizhou, provide further diving, swimming, and snorkelling.
