Introduction to Baoding - Beishi
Beishi, translated as 'North City', is a district within the Baoding prefecture of Hebei province in northern China. Baoding itself is a city adjoining the massive conurbation of Beijing, 140kms away to the southeast. The Old Town is its historic heart, with its ancient Lotus Gardens and it's well-known for the traditional 'Baoding Balls' used to strengthen hand and wrist actions. A later addition to the local speciality cuisine is the Donkey Burger. The region holds many cultural sites, having been first settled during the Han Dynasty, over 2,000 years ago. Set in the surrounding hills are many ancient Han tombs, including those of famous ruler Liu Sheng and his wife, with a section of the Great Wall of China close by. In the district are several Beishi hotels, conveniently located for many of the attractions in this popular tourism region and also for business travellers to the district's industrial park.
