Talca is a richly historic part of Chile. Chilean independence was proclaimed here in 1818 and two venerable educational institutions - the Univeridad de Talca and the Catholic University of Maule - are located here. Also, the local Catholic Church has been seen as a very influential presence in the evolution of religion in Chile.
