Introduction to La Serena - City Centre

Only Chile's capital Santiago is older than La Serena. Established in 1544, the city offers visitors both an engaging historic environment and easy access to some of the country's nicest beaches. The downtown core contains most of the oldest buildings; a mix of impressive landmarks like the Cathedral and charming row houses dating to the Spanish colonial period. This is where visitors will discover the most authentic atmosphere, as well as numerous interesting cafes, bars and shops. The area around Eduardo de la Barra Street has a dense concentration of amenities, but most tourists come for the beaches. Sea Avenue runs along the edge of the city centre, providing access to 12 different coves. A useful pedestrian promenade runs parallel to the avenue, allowing guests to walk from most La Serena City Centre hotels to the beach of their choice. The city's Archaeological Museum is also worth a look to get a feel for the rich heritage this part of Chile represents.
