Things to do in Chile
Puerto Varas - go on a romantic sunset cruise
Take a sunset cruise on Lake Llanquihu at Puerto Varas on a 100 year old sailing yacht and enjoy spectacular views of the private beaches and buildings in the area. Set the sails and sip on Pisco Sours whilst watching the sun go down and dine on local delicacies. The tour leaves late afternoon and returns early evening and takes groups of up to 50.Punta Arenas - enjoy the craft market at Munoz Gamero Square
The Munoz Gamero Square is located in central Punta Arenas and is a popular place for locals with its conifers offering plenty of shade from the midday sun. There is a local crafts market here where all kinds of traditional crafts are made and sold at reasonable prices. Also in the square is a statue of Magellan, the famous explorer, along with his faithful Indian servant. Tradition has it that you get good luck by kissing or rubbing the Indian’s foot.Santiago de Chile - experience and watch city life at the Plaza de Armas
The centre of any Spanish town is locally known as the Plaza de Armas or Town Square, and Santiago is no exception. This is a great place to sit in a café or restaurant and watch the world go by, or take a walking tour, taking in the beautiful architecture, some of which dates back to the 1540’s including the Museo Historico and large Cathedral Metropolitana.Santiago de Chile - take a tour of the General Cemetery
A walk though the General Cemetery in Santiago is like taking a walk through Chilean history, as many of the founders of the country are buried here, including President Salvador Allende, Chile’s 29th President. It is definitely worth taking a guide as it is easy to become lost here and good shœes are definitely recommended. Many of the gravestones and Mausoleums are very ornate and mini works of art in their own right. Santiago de Chile - visit La Chascona, home of the Noble prize winner Pablo Neruda
Pablo Neruda was granted the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971 just 2 years before his death in 1973. In his time he served in a number of Diplomatic posts for the Chilean Government around the world but still continued his prolific writing. His home in La Chascona is testament to his life with examples of his works on display as well as a marvelous garden set out on different levels. Tours in English are available but can be very busy at the weekend.Vina del Mar - take a horse and carriage ride
Vina del Mar or the Garden City has so much to offer it is sometimes hard to work out where to start. One great way is to take a horse and carriage ride, called Victorias by the locals, around the town to plan the next day’s activities. The driver will point out many places of interest including the new casino and the traditional flower clock that actually tells the time.Introduction to Chile
Narrow, winding Chile extends from the edge of the Peruvian Andes right to the glaciers of Antarctica. It is a developed and relatively wealthy nation that leads in several South American and Latin American indices. Chile hotels are spread across a remarkably versatile range also, with five star accommodations at one end, usually in the heavily populated central areas and also the capital Santiago, while elsewhere, tiny family run guesthouses dot the terrain of some of Chile's off-the-beaten-track regions. The accommodations are numerous and advance bookings are usually only required when online advance booking discounts and other bargain rates for the properties are desired. New arrivals can almost invariably secure a room as a walk-up customer, but as always reservations are recommended to avoid any possibility of disappointment. Heavily touristed parts of Chile such as Valparaiso are more likely to be booked out in peak seasons but tourists coming to the area to explore the marvels of Easter Island will invariably have accommodation booked into their tour packages.Visit our Chile Travel Guide
