Introduction to Calama, Chile
Dry and sparse Calama swelters in one of the driest regions in the world, the norhtern deserts of Chile. The River Loa runs through town and is a vital water source for the quarter of a million residents who otherwise receive only five milimetres of rain annually. Calama hotels offer handy access to the attractions of the chilean desert such as the Lickan-antay communes of places such as Caspana, Lasana and Aiquina-Turi. Other hotels in Calama are located on the roads out of town, heading towards the nearby town of Chiu-Chiu, and incredible spectacles like the Tuyajto lagoon, the Aguas Calientes salt flat and the El Tatio Geysers. Visitors with particular interests in any of these draw cards should book a room located nearby since distances require a vehicle and this may be problematic for some.
