Introduction to Antofagasta - City Centre
In the dramatic northern end of Chile, where the Pacific Ocean meets up with the shockingly dry Atacama Desert, the industrial city of Antofagasta provides a base for travellers to regroup and rest. Few would argue that Antofagasta is pretty, or even a worthy travel destination, as most of the atmosphere here revolves around factory workers. There are few tourist attractions, but the stretch of downtown between the two main squares, Plaza Sotomayor and Plaza Colon, provide the lion's share of entertainment. A nice pedestrian mall connects these two squares and Sotomayor has a great local market that offers the best shopping for handicrafts and the like. Two large malls are located along the waterfront for a more modern social experience. It's also fun to head down to the harbour and watch the fishermen, sea lions and pelicans jostling for their share. Many of the Antofagasta City Centre hotels are located around the bus terminal, offering convenience over ambiance.
