A large area of land that has seemingly broken away from the North American continent at the very point at which Canada and the United States meet, Vancouver Island is a scenic area of rainforest and snow-capped mountains. Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, is located at the island's southern end. Aside from scenic spots, this city itself is the island's main draw with its historic buildings that date back to Britain's settlement of the area, including stocky Christ Church Cathedral. The north of the island is the least populated area, with excellent salmon fishing on the Campbell River and the chance to view grizzly bears at Telegraph Cove. Don't forget to head to ecotourism hotspot Tofino for hot springs, whale-watching and even surfing. Vancouver Island hotels are mostly located in Victoria, especially in the area close to the main harbour, with good views across the strait, but there are plenty of other options.
