Situated in southwestern Quebec, French-speaking Val Dor is a small city surrounded by lakes and attractive scenery that make it a popular location for outdoor pursuits. With its airport, there are good connections from this mining town to a handful of other destinations, including Montreal. The city's name means Valley of Gold in French, and there is a City of Gold visitor's centre open to tourists which explains the gold mining process with an underground tour of a deposit and an overground tour of the historic mining village of Bourlamarque. Aside from precious metals, Val Dor offers a host of scenic parks that fill up in the summer and a number of forests and cycle tracks all within walking distance of the city centre. A few miles northwest, there is a large lake with an attractive island that makes an excellent short trip. Val Dor hotels are mostly found on or close to 3rd Avenue, the main road to the sister city of Jabola.
