Introduction to Quebec - Baie Sainte Catherine
Two of the most important bodies of water in the province of Quebec, the St Lawrence River and the Saguenay fjord, meet in the tiny but naturally-blessed village of Baie Sainte Catherine. In 1603, two French explorers met with two First Nations leaders in this picturesque community to open exploration of the St Lawrence River to the French. Today, this village may contain just 227 people, but there are plenty of Baie Sainte Catherine hotels, most of which boast waterfront views of either the Saguenay fjord or St Lawrence River. Both bodies of water can also easily be seen from Pointe Noire, the main interpretive centre here, along with whales and other impressive marine mammals. Visitors can enjoy even closer views of these marine creatures aboard any of the guided whale watching cruises available here. A free ferry service only takes eight minutes to sail between Baie Sainte Catherine and another nearby community, Tadoussac, on the Saguenay fjord's opposite end. The horseback riding at Ranch du Fjord is the most popular land activity here.Visit our Quebec Travel Guide
