The town of Amherst, with its rich heritage and natural beauty, is among the few places in Canada where visitors can travel to three different provinces in an hour. Many people stay in Amherst hotels during their trips to eastern Canada's Maritime provinces because of their close proximity to both New Brunswick's biggest city, Moncton, and Prince Edward Island. Both destinations are less than 70kms away from this Cumberland County town, only three kilometres east of Nova Scotia's border with New Brunswick. However, many visitors decide to stay longer once they learn more about the town's interesting history. Four of Canada's Fathers of Confederation come from this town, and beautiful Victorian and Edwardian homes line its downtown streets, which also feature colourful murals and independent shops. There is also an art gallery here in addition to the Cumberland County Museum. At least 200 different bird species can be spotted at the Amherst Point Bird Sanctuary, while the Tantramar Theatre hosts three separate theatre companies each summer. The nearby beaches boast the warmest waters north of North and South Carolina.
