Medicine Hat is known by all and sundry as The Hat and it is a gentle town home to about 60 000 people in the southeast of Alberta, Canada. The huge natural gas reserves underneath the town made author Rudyard Kipling comment that Medicine Hat had all hell for a basement. There are substantial military bases and army facilities here along with many important educational institutions and some Medicine Hat hotels are part of these facilities or at least do their best annual business when major events and conferences take place. Other hotels in Medicine Hat are located in downtown Medicine Hat itself. Some offer views of the world’s largest tee-pee, the Giant Tee-Pee installation which is a tourist attraction that doubles as a monument to the region’s indigenous peoples. It is 20 storeys high and many Medicine Hat hotels will feature information and advice on the monument’s history and current location.
