Introduction to Matane - Beach

The St Lawrence and Matane Rivers meet at the fun-packed and beautiful Gaspe Peninsula city of Matane, situated 409kms northeast of Quebec City. None of the Matane Beach hotels are far away from the water in this city, whose maritime history dates back to the early 1500s. The town's original lighthouse is now a museum, and interpretive displays dedicated to former boat captains can be found along the Promenades des Capitaines boardwalk. Visitors who do not wish to participate in the salmon fishing, for which this community is so famous, can watch the fish swim and spawn from the comfort of the centrally-located Barrage Mathieu-D'Amours de Matane dam. Another observation tower belongs to the Jardins de Doris garden complex along the riverbank, which also features a huge sundial, ponds where fish and ducks swim and a goat enclosure. There are also two cinemas, three bowling alleys and several bars in this surprisingly-lively town.
