Introduction to Kapuskasing, Canada
Kapuskasing is an Ontario town that sits directly on Highway 11, between Temiskaming Shores and Thunder Bay. Located along the bank of the beautiful Kapuskasing River, the town is surrounded by forests of black spruce and small lakes in the heart of the Great Clay Belt and the Boreal Forest. There are some lovely beaches, trails for hiking and excellent spots for fishing at Rene Brunelle Provincial Park. Hunting and fishing are popular pastimes in the area due to the abundance of wildlife found here. From Kapuskasing hotels, it is possible to reach a number of breathtaking waterfalls, including Sturgeon Falls, White Spruce Rapids and Big Beaver Falls. One of the largest internment camps of WWI was located in Kapuskasing, holding mainly Ukrainian prisoners as well as Germans and Austrians. The only remaining evidence of its existence is a historical plaque that sits outside a small cemetery holding prisoners' remains. Learn about the town through the eyes of its historic icons at the Ron Morel Memorial Museum.
