Introduction to Guelph - City Centre
Guelph is a Canadian city in the southwest of Ontario, less than an hour's drive from Toronto. It is considered to be one of the most liveable places in Canada, courtesy of its fantastic architecture, vibrant festivals and numerous cultural venues. Travellers can reach Guelph City Centre hotels by driving here on Highway 401, and then taking exit 295 for the Hanlon Expressway. Alternatively, VIA Rail operates regular trains from Toronto, taking just over an hour. Those interested in seeing some of the city's best architecture should visit the Church of Our Lady on Norfolk Street. This limestone church was built in 1877, incorporating a Gothic-revival style and overlooking the city. Another fine example of limestone architecture is McCrae House, the birthplace of John McCrae, situated on the south side of the Speed River. This small cottage is now a National Historic Site and tells the story of this famous author's life. No visitor should miss seeing the wooden pedestrian bridge across the Speed River. This fantastic covered bridge was built in 1992 by 400 local volunteers.
