The city of Cornwall, located along the Saint Lawrence River, is the easternmost city in Ontario. The city and its surrounding communities, including Long Sault, Ingleside, Mohawk and Akwesasne, were occupied by aboriginals for millennia before Western settlers arrived. Cornwall is a port of entry from the United States, accessed through Rooseveltown, New York at the Three Nations Crossing, named in recognition of the Mohawks of Akwesasne who still inhabit the area. Many festivals, such as Canada Day, Gay Pride and Lift Off, are celebrated in full force on the city's streets. Lift Off is the city's own annual hot air balloon festival, featuring carnival rides and live music in addition to sky-high rides in balloons. It is possible to ski here in the winter on Big Ben, while those staying in Cornwall hotels can make a trip to Cornwall Island in the summer. The 10 Lost Villages of Ontario are just outside the city; these communities were flooded during the creation of the Saint Lawrence Seaway and have been commemorated by a museum in Ault Park.
