Introduction to Varna - Balchik
The Bulgarian city of Balchik sits on the country's lovely Black Sea coastline just to the north of its larger counterpart, Varna, and is widely considered to be one of the country's most beautiful cities due to its well-preserved history and picturesque seaside location. Balchik hotels fill up through late spring and summer with visitors looking to get a glimpse of the area's main attractions. One of the most spectacular is Balchik Palace, a beautiful garden-shrouded mansion constructed in the late 1920s for the Queen of Romania, who ruled Bulgaria at that time. The Botanic Gardens attached to this property are Europe's second largest and feature in excess of 3000 species of flora. However, perhaps the biggest draws to the area are the lovely golden-sand beaches set adjacent to the city, offering terrific sunbathing and swimming opportunities all summer long. Added attractions here include the ageing architectural wonders dotted around town, many of which date back to the days of the Greek and Ottoman colonisations of the region.
