Introduction to Sofia - Bankya
Situated directly west of the Bulgarian capital of Sofia, Bankya is one of the area's most peaceful and affluent areas and serves as a great place for visitors to base a stay in the region. It's especially convenient for visitors looking to enjoy the mineral springs for which Bankya is justly famous. Many visitors checking into Bankya hotels head straight for the mineral baths, built more than a century ago and continually in use for medicinal treatments since their founding. This scenic community, situated at the base of Lyulin Mountain has much more to offer its visitors, including the Church of Martyrs Quiricus and Julietta, built in the 1930s and inaugurated by Sofia's much-loved Bishop Stephen. 'Vazov's Oak' was the favourite place of relaxation for famed Bulgarian poet Ivan Vazov, and another popular spot for those looking for rest and rejuvenation is the Bankya Palace, a much-revered spa. Interesting Roman ruins can be visited near the city's Ivanyane quarter. Visit our Sofia Travel Guide
