Introduction to Sofia - Airport
First constructed in the 1930s, Sofia Airport is the biggest airport in Bulgaria. The original Terminal 1 remains, having undergone extensive renovation over the years. In addition, a second terminal opened in 2006. The addition of this terminal has significantly improved the airport's infrastructure, adding first-class facilities such as offices, shopping and disabled persons' access. In addition, Sofia Airport hotels offer a convenient stay for passengers with early flights or late arrivals. Since the opening of the much bigger Terminal 2, Terminal 1 has catered to low-cost airlines and charter operators, but still plays an important role in the running of the airport. Sofia Airport is around three miles from the city centre, with transfers provided by buses and taxis. Bus number 384 connects the airport to the city's metro system, while bus number 84 goes direct to the university. In addition, a faster shuttle bus (number 30) runs directly to the city centre from Terminal 1.
