Smolyan, a resort town in southern Bulgaria, is located in a valley on the lower slopes of the Rhodopes mountain range and just 20kms away from the Greek border. Rhodopes loftiest peak, Golyam Perelik, and the ski resorts at Pamporovo and Chepelare are nearby and there is a good selection of hotels in Smolyan that offer services to the many skiers who visit the locality in winter. Most Smolyan hotels are situated on the main thoroughfare, Boulevard Bulgaria, which runs through the centre of town and is where you will find the largest selection of bars and restaurants. Magnificent Ottoman period architecture can still be found in the town and is worth visiting, especially if you like history, the arts and historical architecture. Some Smolyan hotels are housed in these structures and make for very memorable stays. In summer, Smolyan is a good base for hiking through unspoilt countryside and pine forests.
