Pleven is one of the most populated cities in Bulgaria. It has a rich history, meaning that the city is on a number of tour itineraries, while is also attracts travellers keen on exploring the city independently. The city played a key role in the Russian-Turkish War of Liberation. As such, most of the city's interesting attractions are related to this conflict. The Mausoleum-Chanel, located in the city centre, is a good place to start learning about the city's history. This 24-metre high construction pays tribute to the Romanian and Russian infantry who were killed in this war. To the southwest of the city centre, in Skobelev Park, a mixture of paintings, sculptures and texts tell the story of the Pleven Epic, one of the war's greatest battles. Visitors looking for a more contemporary cultural experience can visit one of the city's two theatres. The Theatre of Drama and the Puppet Theatre are both easily accessible from Pleven hotels. Travellers can get to this northern Bulgarian city either by bus or rail. Both the main bus and train stations are located next to one another, in the north of the city.
