Bandar Seri Begawan - explore the beautiful Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque
The Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque in Bandar Seri Begawan is possibly one of the most beautiful mosques in the world. Completed in 1958 no expense was spared in its building as a tribute to the Moslem faith in Brunei. The walls are made of Italian marble, the chandeliers and stained glass windows coming from the UK and the domed roof reaching 52m high is covered in pure gold. The interior of the mosque is for prayer only although you can travel up the elevator in the Minaret for views of the city and man made lagoon.
Gadong - experience wide variety of culinary delights at Gadong Night Market
The Gadong Night Market is the place to go in Brunei to experience the wide variety of culinary delights that the country has to offer. Part of the market sells only fresh vegetables and fruit whilst the larger part is made up of a myriad of stalls and open restaurants offering everything from bar-b-que chicken or fish to freshly made exotic deserts. The market can be found easily from any part of the city by just following your nose and the aromas of cooking.
Introduction to Brunei
The tiny Southeast Asian nation of Brunei Darussalam, or Brunei for short, lies on the coast of the South China Sea. Brunei Darussalam is surrounded by, and divided into two parts by, territory belonging to neighbouring Malaysia. As one of the world’s most rapidly growing countries ruled by one of the world’s richest men, the Sultan of Brunei, most hotels in Brunei have been famously expensive. Fortunately, this has recently changed, and many more affordable Brunei hotels are now available, mainly in the country’s capital of Bandar Seri Begawan. BSB, as the capital city is frequently nicknamed, is also home to Brunei’s only youth hostel, the country’s cheapest accommodation where males and females must sleep in separate rooms. Of course, those willing to spend a little more have plenty of middle and high priced Brunei hotels to choose from, including the many luxury resorts for which the country has become famous. Most Brunei hotels outside Bandar Seri Begawan can be found in the city of Kuala Belait.
