The capital of the Brazilian state of Bahia, Salvador, is one of the most colourful and engaging travel destinations in the country. Considered one of the main birthplaces of Brazilian culture, this fun and festive city features a fantastic historic Old Town core that is protected by UNESCO. Situated on the northeast coast, Salvador plods its way inland for miles. But most people prefer to hang around the coastal neighbourhoods bordering the sea. Pelourinho, the old town district, is the star attraction, featuring hundreds of historic buildings, museums, restaurants, bars and crafty shops wrapped around cobblestone lanes. It may be a bit touristy at times, but this is the heart and soul of the city. Salvador City Centre hotels range from opulent historic beauties to cheap hostels, the latter of which tend to be a bit noisy.
