Introduction to Rio de Janeiro - Ipanema Beach
This world famous beach in Rio de Janeiro's south was immortalised in the 1962 bossa nova tune Girl from Ipanema. Today, it remains distinct from its better known neighbour to the east, Copacabana, with Ipanema having recently been voted as the 'world's sexiest beach' by the Travel Channel. The grid-aligned streets that back the beach are filled with cafes, eateries, shops and Ipanema Beach hotels, all of which draw the sunbathers and surfers who come to this expensive part of the city. Sunday makes for a great day to visit, when the coastal road is closed to motorised traffic. Culture buffs with not be out of place here as the neighbourhood has its own interesting theatres, art galleries and universities, yet drinking beer or the local tipple cachaca at the beach is often a higher priority of visitors than exhibition or theatre-hopping.
