Introduction to Rio de Janeiro - Flamengo Beach
The Rio de Janeiro beach and neighbourhood now known as Flamengo Beach has undergone several name changes throughout the years, but this beach has always been a smaller and less crowded alternative to Ipanema and Copacabana. As elsewhere in Rio de Janeiro, rooms in Flamengo Beach hotels are especially scarce between the December to February tourist season and during Rio de Janeiro's famous Carnivale. Although Flamengo Beach's waters are unsuitable for swimming, the beach boasts spectacular views of Sugar Loaf Mountain. Most other Flamengo Beach attractions are located within the huge Parque Brigadeiro Eduardo Gomes, known to locals as Aterro, the Portuguese word for 'the reclaim'. No Brazilian landscape project is bigger than this large green space filled with sports courts, 3,000 different tree species, a marina and a monument dedicated to fallen Brazilian WWII soldiers. The Carmen Miranda Museum and the Museum of Modern Art are also situated inside this unique park. Brazil's former presidential palace, now the Museum of the Republic, is also located in Flamengo Beach and contains a theatre along with several decades of fascinating history.
