Introduction to Rio de Janeiro - Botafogo
The beachfront bairro of Botafogo, connected to other parts of the city by metro Line 1, is one of Rio de Janeiro's high to middle-class communities. Set between Mundo Novo, Morro de Sao Joao and Santa Marta hills in the city's southeast, the neighbourhood takes its name after Joao Pereira de Sousa Botafogo, a former owner of the land and the commander of the Botafogo galleon's artillery. The main visitor draw here is the beach, which offers fine views of Sugarloaf Mountain. Those who can tear themselves away from the sand for a few hours may like to browse the Museu do Indio museum or the Villa-Lobos Museum. The former has displays pertaining to Brazil's indigenous peoples while the latter traces the life of the Brazilian composer. Also found in this district is writer Ruy Barbosa's former home. For those staying in Botafogo hotels, the area isn't short on things to do after dark either. Take your pick from watching an art house movie at a cinema, people-watching from a cafe or shopping for bargains at the large Botafogo Praia Shopping mall. Visit our Rio de Janeiro Travel Guide
