Introduction to Recife - Boa Viagem Beach
Beautiful beaches, vibrant culture, a fascinating old city and great nightlife characterise the city of Recife, the capital of Brazil's Pernambuco State. Set on the country's northeastern Atlantic coastline, the city was founded by Dutch colonisers in the 18th century. With its streets and districts winding around rivers and canals and across islands, it's known as a Brazilian Venice. Recife Antigo, the old city, lies on an island that is connected to the mainland by bridges over the Capibaribe River. Home to most of the heritage buildings, its port was once the busiest in the Americas. Zona Sul, a new tourist district, is set along the beaches and home to Boa Viagem Beach hotels, along with the airport, bars, restaurants and nightclubs. Boa Viagem Beach and its skyline go by the nickname of the Copacabana of the North East and are a major visitor destination in the country, especially during Carnaval, when the entire area becomes a huge street party.
