With a name meaning 'safe port', Porto Seguro is more than just a safe spot at which to moor yourself. Away from its lovely stretch of sand, this Brazilian beach town offers a historical centre packed with colourful Portuguese homes - built in colonial times but recently restored - as well as churches like the 18th century Nossa Senhora da Penha Matrix. The Cidade Alta, as the old quarter is known, is a recognised National Heritage Monument. The city was founded by Portuguese colonists, and evidence of its importance during the colonial period is discernible in the European flavour of just about every corner of the city. Carnival time sees Porto Seguro City Centre hotels fill up with carnival-goers who come to enjoy the parades of live bands and dancers.
