Introduction to Morro de Sao Paulo - Beach
Some 272kms from the Brazilian city of Salvador by road or 60kms by sea is the small island of Tinhare, with its five tiny villages, one of which is Morro de Sao Paulo. Access to the island is by boat or from Salvador's airport in a small aircraft to the island's airstrip. Cars are not allowed on the island, with tractors the only motorised transportation between the pretty beaches and the guest houses, known as pousadas. These Morro de Sao Paulo Beach hotels make great bases for exploring the village, which was first settled in 1535 by the Portuguese. The island's glory is its beaches, with 10 to choose from, all with varying levels of activities and equipment rental. Snorkelling and diving are popular here, with good corals and diverse marine life. Boat trips can be arranged and beachside eateries serve locally-caught seafood. The island's pretty villages are worth exploring, although a daytrip is ample to see them all.
