Introduction to Manaus - City Centre
On the northern bank of the Rio Negro, just a few miles before it forms the Amazon, the Brazilian city of Manaus has a host of city centre attractions for visitors stopping here en route into the surrounding rainforest. One must-do while in this part of town is a trip to the opera. The city's Opera House dates to the late 19th century, was built on the back of the rubber trade and has hosted some of the globe's most famous opera performers in its time. This arts venue, along with Theatro Amazonas, means visitors are well catered for when it comes to cultured performances. For an authentic Brazilian shopping experience, head for Mercado Municipal, where Manaus's main market is hosted in a building that was modelled on Paris' Les Halles. This is a good place to try the local pamonha, a dessert made with coconut milk and green corn. Small parks like Santa Luzia dot the cityscape, offering respite from the urban jungle while a choice of good standard hotels in Manaus are suitable for whether leisure or business travellers.
