Introduction to Manaus - Amazon
Once a hub of the Brazilian rubber trade, the city of Manaus is located on the Rio Negro, just before it joins the Rio Solimoes to become the mighty Amazon River. The two rivers flow side by side for hundreds of miles, mixing their colours in swirling eddies, known locally as the 'Meeting of the Waters'. Manaus's wealth came from the forests and is reflected in spectacular colonial buildings such as the Opera House and the Mercado Municipale, close copies of Les Halles and the Grand Opera House in Paris. In addition, intriguing Portuguese facades are found all over the city centre. Amazon hotels in the city, still a major river port, range from luxury to budget, offering comfortable and welcoming service. Access by air from Sao Paulo or Rio takes around four hours, but the best way to get here is by boat up the Amazon from the Atlantic coast, taking about five days and offering an experience of a lifetime.
