Introduction to Jericoacoara - Beach
Perhaps one of the planet's last hippy holiday meccas, the little fishing village of Jericoacoara, known as Jeri, is located some 300kms from Fortaleza. It still attracts travellers who arrive for a few days and forget to leave. The unpaved streets, the lack of traffic and the seemingly endless beaches backed with swaying palms are still here. But since the entire area became a national park in 2002, electricity, air-conditioning, hot showers and building restrictions have arrived in this peaceful backwater, bringing a different kind of visitor as a result. Local law still prevents the use of street illuminations, and there's now a choice of Jericoacoara Beach hotels offering a previously unheard of standard of comfort. Access to the village from Fortaleza is easiest by bus, with a change of vehicle in Jiioca, the nearest town.
