Introduction to Itapema, Brazil
Itapema is a popular seaside resort in the state of Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil. It is renowned for its stunning beaches that include the Meia Praia, or Middle Beach in English. State highway route BR-101 runs up the coast from Itapema to Balneario Camboriu. The main grouping of Itapema hotels is off this road, facing out into the Atlantic Ocean. These establishments are close to restaurants serving gastronomic seafood delights and busy nightlife venues. The coastline around the district is characterised by rugged cliffs with a background of dense rainforest. The accommodations are a good base for travelling to Florianopolis, the state capital. Florianopolis is on Santa Catarina Island, around 60kms south of Itapema. The island boasts 40 beaches. Its Atlantic facing beaches are hubs for surfing. Barra da Lagoa is one of the more famous surfing beaches. In winter this beach is frequented by penguins. Florianopolis' historic quarter, Largo da Alfandega, features charming colonial architecture and has some museums.
