Introduction to Brasilia - City Centre
Brasilia is the capital of Brazil and is a modern purpose-built city designed by the architect Oscar Niemeyer, now home to close to three million people. It is the only modern city to have World Heritage status and the city centre is full of stunning architecture. Probably the most outstanding is the cathedral, with its sixteen curved pillars, but the Buriti and Itamaraty palaces are worth a look as well. The modern bridge on Paranoa Lake is also stunning. The lake is a popular hang out for locals, with many restaurants and a park. Visitors will find that there are plenty of hotels in Brasilia city centre to choose from. This area also contains green spaces, cafes and shopping options. For some culture, head to the Teatro Nacional (National Theatre) and see what is playing. The best views of the capital can be had from atop the TV tower. Outside the city, an absolute must-visit is the Poco Azul and Brasilia National Park.
