Introduction to Sarajevo - City Centre
Sarajevo is the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina and has a population of around 310,000 inhabitants. Since the Yugoslav Wars, the city has transformed into a vibrant place full of cultural heritage and life. The city has incredible diversity, with Islam, Judaism, Catholicism and Orthodoxy having coexisted here for centuries. You can see synagogues, mosques and churches standing side by side around the city centre. The Sarajevo bridges are a beautiful addition to the majestic Miljacka River which runs through the centre of the city. The city is one of the most historically interesting in Europe and has an 'east meets west' feel to it. Right in the centre of the city is the Old Town. Here, the cobbled streets remain and there are a number of Oriental style shops which are popular among visitors. Sarajevo City Museum is also located here and traces the city's development from pre-historical periods to modern times. It is a small museum which can be seen in less than 30 minutes but is nevertheless extremely popular.
