Potosi lays claim to being the highest city in the world. It is over 13 thousand feet above sea level and sits in the shadow of the Cerro Rico, or Rich Mountain which soars another three thousand feet above Potosi itself. Like so many old towns in South America, Potosi is a UNESCO listed World Heritage Site. Mining is a very important part of the economy here with silver particularly believed to be found in the mountain and the surrounding countryside. Potosi hotels cluster at the base of the mountain or in the winding lanes of the town. Hotels in Potosi are generally quite modest and relatively free of frills and there are no five star hotels in town. This is in contrast with the town’s reputation as a place of fabulous wealth. Some Potosi hotels were built to cater to the influx of people and itinerant workers from all over the world during the mining boom and some of these dilapidated outfits have real atmosphere and appeal.
