Introduction to La Paz - City Centre
La Paz is the capital of Bolivia and the second largest city in the country. The city is located at an elevation of over 3,600 metres, so some visitors may want to acclimatise themselves before heading out on any vigorous sightseeing. The amazing snow-capped Illimani mountain can be seen from almost anywhere in the city. La Paz City Centre hotels are clustered around the Avenida Montes, the main thoroughfare of the city. For an easy first day, visitors should head to one of the many museums in the city. The Museum of Contemporary Art, Coca Museum and Museum of Precious Metals are all worth visiting. Once visitors are acclimated, a day trip to the Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley) is a must-do. Strolling along the Calle Jaen, which is flanked by beautiful colonial buildings, is a great way to explore the city. Handicrafts are one of the best souvenirs in La Paz and the best can be found while street shopping, for example on Santa Cruz street.
