Belize City is the largest city and former capital of the country of Belize, one of Central America's most popular and stable tourist destinations thanks to its spectacular scenery and the fact English is one of Belize’s official languages. Although there aren’t a lot of popular attractions in Belize City other than a few museums, the city remains an ideal base from which to explore the rest of this beautiful country. Belize City hotels are among the largest in the country, but even the biggest Belize City hotels include no more than 100 rooms. Among the most unique hotels in Belize City are its many smaller inns and bed and breakfast establishments. Most of Belize City’s luxury hotels can be found in the city’s Fort George area, while most of its lower budget accommodations are located on the commercial district in the south side of the city. Most budget Belize City hotels are decent quality, but many also contain scratchy sheets, thin mattresses, and missing telephones.
