Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium: mostly covering Belgian/Flemish fine artists such as Pieter Brueghel and Rubens from the 14th to 20th centuries, this complex of museums houses an impressive collection. Other European artists such as Dali and Matisse are also shown here in what is effectively a combination of classic and contemporary works, many of which are housed in the museums’ many underground floors.

La Maison de la Bandes Dessinee: housed in what was at the time Europe’s first shopping centre, this museum is dedicated to the many comic herœes of Belgium and the rest of the world. Having developed famous comic book herœes including Tin-Tin and the Smurfs, Belgium has a rich history in developing the genre, which is played out in this unique and ever-changing exhibition.

Horta Museum: collection of designs by the famous Art Nouveau architect Victor Horta at one of the buildings he designed in Brussels, where he spent most of life, winning contracts for buildings including the Central Brussels Station.
Rue Americaine, 25, St Gilles. Open: 14:00 to 17:30, Tuesday to Sunday.

Spontaneous Art Museum: featuring art that often would not get a chance to be displayed, some might argue rightly so, this small revolving collection is an intriguing look into influences like raw and naive waves. The low entrance fee and unique nature of this collection makes it an unusual stop on the Brussels art circuit.
