Choice is certainly not a problem here although mussels and chips, which have taken on national delicacy status in Belgium and particularly in Brussels, are everywhere.
Many of the touristy places can be found just to the north of the Grand Place on Rue des Bouchers, or Beenhouwerstraat, meaning prices are higher but there are some good places to try in this area, which becomes very crowded during weekend evenings.
For the best seafood in the Belgian capital, it pays to head to the old fishmongers quarter on Place Saint Catherine where there are a number of quality eateries including sushi joints and places that cook the good old-fashioned French way.
Like most European cities, it is a good idea to get away from the main thoroughfares if you’re looking for a good, cheap meal. Turn off a main street and head for one of the pubs or cafes frequented by the locals and you are sure to find a great local meal.
