Brugge (Bruges) Travel Guide - Day Trips

Zeebrugge: Bruges’s twin port city is often the port of entry for many visitors, particularly from the UK and also makes a worthwhile trip of a day or more in its own right. The huge fish market here stocks much of the country and is one of the biggest in Europe. Zeebrugge is a seaside resort with plenty of places to stay as well as great places to eat out or have a drink. Unsurprisingly, the seafood here is very special.
Oostende: close to Zeebrugge, Oostende is the largest Belgium city on the North Sea coast about 15 miles west of Bruges. The city has a long sandy beach and promenade that attracts holidaymakers from all over Belgium in the summer.
Ghent: to the southwest on the banks of the Schelde River, Ghent is a prosperous city and one of the largest in the Flemish region. A well-preserved medieval city, Ghent features some stunning architecture including the 12th Century Gravensteen Castle modelled after those built during the Crusades. The City’s waterfront is particularly stunning at night when its many medieval and Gothic buildings are lit up against the water.
Damme: a picturesque trip by boat from Bruges taking about half a day goes to the nearby village of Damme, itself a scenic part of East Flanders that can also be reached in just 20 minutes by bus.
Zwin: close to the Dutch border on the far eastern coast of Belgium, Zwin is a small natural reserve well-known for its abundant plant life that is also very popular with birdwatchers. Visitors can also enjoy the zoo here.
