Introduction to Namur, Belgium
The Meuse and Sambre rivers meet in Namur, the capital of Belgium's predominantly French-speaking southern region of Wallonia. This city 60kms southeast of Brussels may have a fairly small population, but its area is quite large and its layout complicated. One of the Namur hotels is part of the local casino, while another accommodation stands on top of the city's biggest tourist attraction, its citadel overlooking the Meuse River. An archaeological museum with Roman Namur artefacts on display and the Museum of Old Namurois Art, filled with Renaissance and medieval Christian art, are the two main museums here. This city is also home of the 18th century St Aubain Cathedral and a World Heritage belfry. Cycling is the most recommended way to explore this city, not only because of the city's large size but because bicycles may travel both ways on the many one-way streets. The views of the passing ferries and the citadel from the Jambes Bridge are worth taking in.
